Sharing farm life with children for two generations.

Fundraiser to save the Farm

In memory of Penny Barker

April 10, 1945 - April 26, 2019

It is with deep sadness we share the news that after a brief struggle with pancreatic cancer, our beloved Penny Barker, the heart and soul of the Country School Farm, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2019. Penny was in treatment when she suffered sudden heart failure and passed away en route to the hospital.

Regrettably this has led to the difficult decision to cancel the farm experience for the summer of 2019. This is the first interruption after forty three summers of continuous satisfaction and joy for the many visitors who have shared our life at the farm. We know how much they look forward to their time here, but this year we would not be able to provide the experience we feel the children deserve.

To make things more complex, the farm in serious financial stress. We are asking for your help in hopes of being able to save the farm that Penny loved so much and shared so generously. Without her heart and determination, our home would not have been a place for children to experience the beauty and meaningfulness of farm life. Contributions will go to refund those who have enrolled and paid for this summer as well as reducing farm debts without having to give up this beloved place that she loved and shared with so many.

The Country School Farm was co-founded by Penny and Richard Barker in 1976. Since its inception, young people have busied themselves on the farm, fostering a close relationship with plants and animals,  learning about life’s simple joys and where things come from. From Penny's honey oat cereal at sunrise to a warm mug of her honey cocoa before bed, days on the farm were filled with activities, impacted all who visited. It is a place that holds meaning for thousands of children and it is home to many beloved animals, including our 12 dairy goats, 8 bunnies, 14 sheep, 13 cats including Tiger Kitty, 36 chickens, 6 peafowl, 12 guinea hens, and Eddy the pug.Penny and Richard 2019
